To support children’s understanding of healthy eating, sustainability and plant growth, Gowrie Victoria Broadmeadows Valley in Victoria set about creating new vegetable garden beds all children in their service could be involved in.
Using their Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant, students at Marmion Primary School got to work planting native seedlings in remnant Banksia Woodland at the school to help restore the degraded edges and reduce weed invasion. They also planted bush tucker seedlings around the school’s yarning circle.
City Beach Primary School’s ‘Healthy Hearts, Bodies and Minds’ project set about reviving the school’s existing garden space and involved students in sustainable practices to grow herbs, fruits, vegetables and bush tucker to create an inviting, multi-sensory garden the whole school community can now enjoy.
St Paul’s Catholic School set about establishing a Bush Food Garden to give students a hands-on opportunity to learn how to create their own sustainable food gardens, but also to deepen their understanding of First Nations histories and cultures.
