Finalists of the 2018 Woolworths Junior Landcare Team Award recently spent a fascinating day at Northey Street City Farm learning all about the principles of permaculture.
The field trip was part of the 2018 National Landcare Conference held in Brisbane this month.
Northey Street City Farm is a community-based urban permaculture farm which promotes and educates for sustainability.
The award finalists had the opportunity to learn about permaculture practices and experience the life of an urban farm. The day included a sensory walk through the food gardens, learning about apiculture, exploring Indigenous knowledge, and feeding the farm’s resident chickens.
A highlight for many of the finalists was getting their hands dirty creating earth art. Using natural materials – such as clay, mud, and charcoal – the students drew, painted, and moulded environmentally sustainable masterpieces.
The day finished with each group sharing about the fantastic work they had been nominated for which included; caring for a South Australian Fleurieu swamp, advocating for the atlas moth, and revegetating native remnant vegetation sites.
It was a fantastic day, with each participant going home proud to be a Junior Landcarer and more inspired to continue to care for the land and water assets that sustain us.
