Empowering students to protect koalas and local wildlife through hands-on learning and community action.

Delungra Public School is proving that education can be a powerful force for environmental change. Nestled in the heart of the community, the school has become a beacon of sustainability, cultural respect, and hands-on learning.  They are creating a ripple effect that benefits students, wildlife, and the wider region.

At the core of this initiative is a deep commitment to protecting Guda – the koala, an Aboriginal totem – and the rich biodiversity of local wildlife. This isn’t just a side project; it’s woven into the school’s High Potential and Gifted Education strategies, giving students opportunities to explore, innovate, and lead.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Students don’t just read about conservation – they live it! From monitoring native animals with strategically placed cameras to contributing data to the Atlas of Living Australia, their work supports national efforts to safeguard ecosystems. Weekly wildlife sightings, including koalas, birds, reptiles, and marsupials, are carefully recorded, turning students into citizen scientists.

Creating Habitats and Hope

The school’s greenhouse is a hub of life, growing seedlings that restore habitats and strengthen biodiversity. Watering stations installed across the campus provide relief during heatwaves and droughts, while 10 newly built nesting boxes offer safe homes for koalas and other tree-dwellers. These boxes are monitored termly, giving students a front-row seat to nature’s wonders.

Empowering Future Leaders

Education extends to understanding wildlife health challenges such as injuries, disease, and climate impacts.  This is equipping Delungra Public School students and the community with knowledge to care for their environment. The garden program goes beyond fruits and vegetables, cultivating koala food trees and native plants that attract birds, insects, and mammals, creating a thriving ecosystem.

A Story of Connection

Delungra Public School’s efforts are more than conservation.  They’re about connection: connecting students to culture and land, communities to nature, and education to real-world action. Through this inclusive, forward-thinking approach, the school is shaping passionate advocates and future leaders who will champion a sustainable future.
