Merri Creek inspires Newland Primary’s native garden

Melbourne’s Merri Creek is a great educational site for the schools close by. It’s an important cultural site, protected and restored by the local community, and home to lots of native flora and fauna. So when Newlands Primary School, located close to Merri and Edgars Creeks, wanted to undertake a biodiversity project, they decided to get in contact with local Landcare group, the Merri Creek Management Committee (MCMC), to lend a hand.

A sanctuary for birdlife in an urban jungle

With a school on the edge of Melbourne’s CBD and the majority of students living in built-up, urban areas, students and teachers were looking at ways of increasing biodiversity within the school grounds. To kick off a long-term regeneration project, they decided to create a bird sanctuary, planting a native garden and installing bird baths to attract small native birds including the white-plumed honeyeater, silvereye, superb fairy-wren and spinebill.

Kids get a buzz out of helping bugs

Narelle gained inspiration for her latest environmental project, building ‘Beneficial Bug Hotels’ after a recent trip to Europe, during which she saw many bug hotels that had been built by young people and installed in parks, forests, kindergartens, and schools.
