Project Overview:  

St Angela’s Primary School in NSW, supported by a Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant, created a vegetable garden to promote healthy eating, environmental sustainability, and community spirit. 

60 students participated in hands-on activities to design, plant, and maintain the garden, learning practical gardening skills while reducing their carbon footprints. The project fostered an inclusive environment where students collaborated and developed a shared commitment to sustainability and well-being. 

Educational Outcomes  

Students learned about seasonal planting, composting, and sustainable gardening practices. Workshops on food waste reduction and composting encouraged sustainability, while the focus on local food sourcing reduced the school’s carbon footprint. 

The garden provided a vibrant habitat for local pollinators, enhancing biodiversity while producing fresh, seasonal vegetables. 

Conclusion 

The project strengthened teamwork, problem-solving, and a deeper appreciation for nature. Students gained valuable skills in gardening, developed an understanding of ecological balance, and built a stronger connection to their community. The successful harvest of vegetables instilled pride and highlighted the benefits of fresh, locally grown produce.
