Altona College frog habitat - before

Age Groups: 7-13

Grant Name: 2023 Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants

School: Altona College Victoria

Grant Sponsor: Woolworths

Project Overview

With the support of the 2023 Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant, students from Altona College enhanced their surrounding environment by creating a sustainable frog-friendly habitat. After a year of heavy rainfall, the students observed increased frog activity within the vegetation surrounding the school's pond. The project aimed to create a more suitable habitat to attract and support local frog populations, contributing to biodiversity and controlling the mosquito population.

Educational Outcomes

Aligned with the Year 5/6 students' Term 3 inquiry theme, "Things and Habitats," the project was integrated into the curriculum, fostering research skills, habitat exploration, and ecological understanding. Students engaged in background research on various habitats, focusing on local frog species and their habitat requirements. The preparation and planting of the area helped the students involved apply this knowledge to create an optimal environment for frogs. Through surveys conducted before and after the project, they collected data, drew conclusions, and will continue to monitor long-term effects, promoting a deeper understanding of ecological systems and the impact of their actions.

Conclusion

Each student discovered unique aspects of the project that brought them joy, and they eagerly waited for the arrival of frogs to the habitat. The students take pride in the positive environmental impact they've achieved, noting a heightened sense of respect for the area. The project demonstrates students' dedication to environmental responsibility, showcasing the tangible and positive impact it has had on both the local ecosystem and the broader school community.
