CASE STUDY

Age Groups: 0-7
Grant Name: 2024 Woolworths Junior Landcare Grants
School: Pearce Preschool ACT
Grant Sponsor: Woolworths
Project Overview:
Pearce Preschool in ACT, recipient of Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant, established a biodiverse garden habitat to attract native bird species while growing environmental stewardship and biodiversity awareness among its young learners.
The preschool community united for a working bee to prepare and plant the garden beds. Volunteers, many with their children, worked together to dig, plant, mulch, and water the garden. Since its establishment, the preschoolers have continued caring for the space, fostering a sense of pride and responsibility.
The 25 preschoolers regularly observe and expand their knowledge of bird life within the preschool grounds and their broader community. During outdoor play, they reference bird books to identify species spotted in the garden, trees, or sky. The children take responsibility for monitoring and refilling the bird baths and help water the plants to maintain the new garden.
Educational Outcomes
Throughout this project, the preschoolers developed an understanding of local biodiversity, learning to identify different bird species and plants while recognising their roles within the ecosystem. This hands-on experience sparks curiosity about nature, builds awareness of environmental interdependence, and encourages children to value and care for living things. Through daily interactions in the garden, the children gain early knowledge of sustainable practices, laying the foundation for environmental stewardship.
Conclusion
The students' favourite part of the project was identifying the birds they hoped to attract to the garden. They also enjoyed watering the garden, often racing to grab the watering cans or hose, proudly contributing to the growth and health of the plants. This project has become a source of joy and discovery, enriching the children's connection to nature.
“This project has helped create a beautiful garden space that will help attract the local bird life into the preschool, and in turn will support continuous learning and engagement about the amazing birdlife in Canberra, for our current and future preschoolers.” Kim Shelley - Lead Educator Pearce Preschool
